Day 11 of the World Cup 2026 was an eventful day centered around incredible goalkeeping saves and mistakes. Although Spain has regained its form and Belgium continues to struggle as a post-"Golden Generation," their performance has further increased the good feeling America has in this tournament. Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand had a performance that made him a candidate for the save of the tournament. Cape Verde once again provided a surprise, drawing 2-2 with Uruguay in Miami, with Mohamed Salah scoring three goals in 24 minutes to beat New Zealand 3-1 and all but ensure Egypt's place in the knockout stages. Spain's Ramin Yamal made his first start in this World Cup and scored as a super sub. His first goal came 10 minutes into the 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia in Atlanta, making him the only scorer after Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane, Vinicius Junior and Erling Haaland. Salah also played an active role in Egypt's 3-1 victory. Yamal made his major debut at Euro 2024 at the age of 16 years and 338 days, making him the youngest player to compete in the Men's European Championship. His development over the past two years has established him as a star for Spain, and the surprise 0-0 draw with Cape Verde highlighted his importance in helping Spain break through a stout defence. Against Saudi Arabia, he showed his magic within 30 seconds of coming on, showing his growth since the Euros in Germany. Belgium was on the verge of scoring. Kevin De Bruyne's pass drifted in front of goal and while the Iranian goalkeeper was on the ground, Maxim de Kuiper fired in a shot from a few yards out. However, Beiranvand miraculously reached out and saved the ball. This save garnered early attention as a potential save of the tournament and earned Iran an important point. Beiranvand received 23 Belgian shots (7 of them on target) in Los Angeles and finished the game without conceding a goal. But while there has been some exceptional play, they have now reached 100 goals in 33 games, making it the fastest in the competition in 68 years. Cape Verde's 2-2 draw with two-time World Cup champions Uruguay in Miami shows that many groups are proceeding without a leader as the tournament progresses. Cape Verde's second draw of the tournament means they can make a historic run to the finals with just one more point against Saudi Arabia on Friday. However, Uruguay also has 2 points and Saudi Arabia has 1 point, so the situation in Group H is still unpredictable. Draws are the trend this tournament, with 13 out of 40 matches (32.5%) ending in draws, higher than the average of 25% over the past seven World Cups. This leaves many teams in a positive but precarious situation with one or two points, needing a win or a draw to advance as the top of the eight third place teams.
