Arsenal missed out on the chance to win the Champions League for the first time in their history.

Arsenal's title-winning history includes 14 league titles and 14 FA Cups. However, European titles have been extremely rare, with only two in the club's history to date: the 1970 Intercity Competition and the 1994 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

Arsenal have no experience of winning a title on the highest stage, but the trophy they were supposed to win in this final was especially meaningful. If they had won the title, Arsenal would have ended a 32-year drought without winning a European title.

Arsenal have only ever reached the final of the Champions League once, against Barcelona at the Stade de France in 2006. Arsenal took the lead thanks to Sol Campbell's opening goal, but goals from Samuel Eto'o and Giulio Belletti in the final minute of the game gave Arsenal the lead and they lost 1-2. Arsenal's Robert Pires and manager Arsene Wenger were unable to play in that match due to injury, but their presence was still considered important, so Barcelona's victory, led by manager Frank Rijkaard, was more likely to be a defeat for Arsenal, along with the fact that Robin van Persie and Dennis Bergkamp did not play in the match.
